Anyparent of a young child will tell you that being able to “go with the flow” is a necessary skill. That’s exactly what happened with this session. You see, Josie’s mom and I had planned a studio session for her 1 year milestone. The weather was starting to get warmer, but this is New England…you can go from the mid 60’s to below freezing in a matter of days. So we decided to play it safe, especially since a cake smash was involved. I got to my studio early to set up like I always do. Things were going as planned until…the power went out. This is a big problem for someone who shoots with studio lights! A construction project had knocked out the power to several of the main streets in Beverly and my client was set to arrive any minute.

Thankfully I have very understanding and easy going clients. When Josie and her mom arrived we decided not to scrap the session entirely (because there was a delicious cake involved) and opted to head outdoors. It was overcast and not what you’d call “warm”, but we made it work. And you know what? The results were totally worth it! Although I’m not sure I’ll be offering outdoor cake smashes anytime soon – the cleanup is NOT easy when you aren’t near running water. But Josie had a blast!

Milestone sessions are such a fun way to document your baby’s budding personality! Typically scheduled between 6 months and 12 months of age, these sessions can take place outdoors at a location of your choosing or in the studio.  There’s no better way to celebrate your baby’s first smile, when they learned to sit up or crawl, or their first birthday than with a special portrait session.
