To the Moon and Back – North Shore MA Newborn Photographer

Let me preface this post by saying that I have wanted to attend an in-person newborn workshop for a LONG time. The stars aligned for me this year in terms of my schedule and my savings and I was finally able to take the plunge and sign up for one. There are a lot of choices out there for photographers and since workshops are a considerable investment I wanted to be sure I found just the right one. And I did!

Last week I traveled down to Leesburg, VA to mentor with Amber Scruggs of Little Moon Photography. I have admired her work for years and she is well established in the newborn photography industry, so when I got an email back in March that she was offering a workshop this summer I jumped on the chance to attend. Best decision I have ever made for my business! I was able to connect with other photographers from across the country and spend a whole day in Amber’s studio soaking up as much information as I could. Since there were only 5 of us in the group, we were able to photograph every pose/setup and receive individual instruction from Amber, which is not something that all workshops offer. Having a small group and the opportunity to receive 1:1 attention was important to me.

I learned how to streamline my newborn posing workflow AND work with studio lighting which has been on my to-do list for a while. I love natural light, but after seeing how easy it is to work with studio lighting I may be ready to make the change! Not to mention that the images I captured at the workshop took literally 30 seconds each to edit. That right there is enough to sell me on the switch. Here are some of the images from that day. The posing and styling was done by Amber, but all of the images were taken and edited by me!

Our first model was an absolute dream. I don’t think her eyes opened once the whole time.

The second model was a little bit more feisty, but super cute and curly! I think she was only 5 or 6 days old on the day of our workshop.

Our one and only boy model of the day was so cute, I think we all wanted to take him home with us! This setup with the wood backdrop and antique bucket was my absolute favorite from the whole day.

And here’s a little “behind the scenes” action.

Overall, I can’t say enough good things about Amber’s workshop. She was a wonderful hostess and you can tell how much time and thought she has put in to making these workshops worth the time and travel – from the carefully thought out goody bags (I won’t lie, the bag of gummy bears was my favorite part) to the beautiful full-color workbook that will serve as a great reference for future sessions.

Looking forward to seeing where this new knowledge takes me on my photography journey!
